Personal Safety with the Las Vegas Police Department

Detective Mona Miller has been with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department for 13 years, an Officer for 18.5 years. Her most important case was in 2017, Det Miller was the lead case agent on the Jane Priebe kidnapping in Las Vegas. Priebe was found safe in New Mexico. The case was nationally nominated as a top Federally prosecuted case of the year. Detective Miller plans on retiring in a year and a half and then wants to teach water aerobics. She is a mother of 2 and has 2 dogs.

Valuation Council Update and Panel Q&A 

Leslie Mamalis has been a critical part of Summit Veterinary Advisors’ success since 2006, providing practice valuations, profitability assessments, feasibility analyses, and financial consulting to veterinary specialists and general practices alike. She has an MBA and an MS in Information Technology and became a Certified Valuation Analyst in 2013. She worked for the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) for seven years, beginning with management education and then becoming involved with the accreditation program.  Leslie served as the co-chair of the VetPartners Valuation Council for over four years and is a past co-chair of the Membership Committee. Leslie is an author and frequent speaker on practice management, profitability, and value topics. She has extensive experience helping veterinarians and managers understand financial figures so they can use that information to increase practice profitability and value.

Dr. Gary Ackerman is the founder & Co-CEO of Ackerman Group, having started the company 20 years ago. He has since assisted veterinarians and their professional advisors with hundreds of business, real estate and tax deferred sale transactions worth billions of dollars.

Gary earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia in 1981 before establishing his own multi-doctor, multi-site practice in Virginia. After growing his veterinary practices for 20 years, he sold them to a corporate buyer in 2001, where he experienced the transition process firsthand. Throughout his career, Gary gained a wealth of knowledge and experience across many different areas that position him as an industry leader in the veterinary world today. In addition to being a DVM and former veterinary practice owner, he is also a licensed commercial real estate agent and investment advisor. His areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): corporate practice sales, veterinary practice ownership, business growth and management, real estate transactions and construction planning, tax mitigation strategies, practice transitions, transaction due diligence, practice evaluations and private equity investment analysis. Gary is a regular speaker at veterinary conferences and events, and he is an approved CE teacher for numerous veterinary, realtor, accounting, and legal firms/conferences. He has published across multiple trade magazines and management publications where he writes about real estate issues in healthcare as well as practice transitions. He is the co-author of the Ackerman Group quarterly State of the Market report on the veterinary market as well as many webinars on diverse topics related to veterinary practice exit strategies. Gary lives in Richmond, Virginia with his wife Brenda. He has two children in college. When time permits, he enjoys water sports and an occasional game of racquetball.

David McCormick is veterinary practice appraiser, broker and transaction specialist. He has over 20 years experience with veterinary practice valuations, facilitating transactions and helping current and future practice owners reach their goals. He teaches nationally and internationally on topics including practice value & practice financial health, buying/selling a practice, exit planning and practice ownership issues. He operates the veterinary brokerage firms of Simmons Mid-Atlantic and Simmons Great Lakes.

Whole Hospital Safety Panel: Practice Case Studies

Dr. Lauren Forsythe  is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Service Head at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She is also a diplomat of the International College of Veterinary Pharmacists. Dr. Forsythe graduated from the University of Findlay, College of Pharmacy in 2015 and completed her veterinary pharmacy residency at Purdue’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Following competition of her residency, Dr. Forsythe spent three years at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital as a Clinical Pharmacist before coming to UIUC in 2019.

Kelley Detweiler is  a DEA & regulatory compliance professional who provides controlled-substance risk-management solutions to the veterinary, healthcare and cannabis industries as well as DEA listed chemical consulting to manufacturing, pharmaceutical and supply chain companies. Kelley the coauthor of the “AAHA Guide to Safeguarding Controlled Substances” published in February 2021 and is the founder and President of Kolibry, LLC which provides  a variety of solutions guidance, education and support to the veterinary and healthcare industries – covering all aspects of DEA regulatory compliance.  The company is managed by subject matter experts and former DEA Agents and Diversion Investigators to assess risk, generate a proactive compliance environment and remediate issues that arise.  In addition, she has also partnered  with Dr. Peter Weinstein in Simple Solutions for Vets which does more than address controlled substance compliance issues that arise – it helps clients identify gaps before there is a problem. The  goal is to simplify DEA compliance by helping veterinarians “operate smarter” and offer the proactive guidance, processes, training and education so they can execute an effective compliance program to avoid costly fines, reputational damage, employee turnover rates and in worst case scenarios, the loss of their license and/or practice.

Nicole Clausen is the founder and consultant at Veterinary Care Logistics, a consulting firm specializing in inventory management for veterinary professionals. Since its inception, Nicole and Veterinary Care Logistics have helped hundreds of veterinary practices, from coast to coast, create sustainable, lasting inventory management strategies in their veterinary practices. She is also the founder of the Veterinary Inventory Strategy Network, a community and educational platform dedicated to inventory management, the host of the Inventory Nation Podcast, the founder of Inventory Ally, the first-ever inventory management software for veterinarians, and a regular speaker on inventory management.

Part II:  Are we back to a new normal in veterinary medicine? What the numbers tell us 

Matthew Salois, PhD is currently the President of the Veterinary Management Groups (VMG), where he is responsible for enhancing the economic and cultural success of more than 2,000 veterinary member practices. Most recently, Matt was the chief economist and head of the veterinary economics division at the AVMA between 2018 and 2022, where he applied his skills in economics, business, and communication to support the daily lives of veterinarians. From 2014 to 2018, he served as director of global scientific affairs and policy at Elanco Animal Health. Matt is also an adjunct professor of applied economics at the University of Florida, where he previously taught and advised graduate and undergraduate students. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the University of Florida and holds an M.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Health Services Administration from the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Jones has broad global experience in the animal health industry from R&D to marketing and from operations to sales while working for several major global animal health companies.  Bob currently leads Brakke Consulting, a business that focuses only on animal health and nutrition industries.  Brakke Consutling offers consulting, market research, transaction and recruiting services to its clients around the world through a group of experienced consultants based in the US, Brazil and Japan.

Prior to joining Brakke Consulting, Bob worked for 12 years for Novartis Animal Health as President and CEO of the North American business for five years and then as the Head of International Animal Health business for five years where he guided growth in emerging markets in Latin America, Asia and Africa.  He then served as the Global Head of BD&L, Strategy, and Sales Force Excellence, where he was responsible for the global strategic plan as well as efforts to drive sales force effectiveness and productivity.  In May of 2014, Bob returned to lead the North American Region and lead the organization through the acquisition by Elanco Animal Health and the divestment of a major, profitable brand to Virbac Animal Health.

Bob started his career at American Cyanamid and has first-hand experience of the consolidation in the industry, having gone through five acquisitions in his career.  He has held senior leadership positions in Fort Dodge Animal Health, Roche Vitamins, Alpharma, and Pharmacia Animal Health.

Bob graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and then through a Rotary Fellowship, he graduated with a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.  Bob finished his education in under a research fellowship at the University of Illinois with a PhD in Animal Science.
